1: Independent driving will increase to 20 minutes
The independent drive currently lasts for 10 minutes. The Driving Examiner instructs the candidates on test to follow signs or directions or a combination of both. On and after the 4th December this part of the test will increase to 20 minutes, roughly half of the test.
2: Following directions from a SatNav
During the independent part most candidates will be asked to follow directions from a SatNav.
You will be able to ask the Examiner for confirmation of where you are going if not sure.
It will not matter if you go the wrong way, unless you make a fault while doing it.
One in 5 driving tests won’t use a SatNav. The Examiner will ask you to follow signs for around 20 minutes instead.
The Examiner will provide the SatNav and set it up using one of the pre-stored routes. It will be plugged into an external powerbank supplied by the DVSA…they will not plug it into the cars power point.
The screen will be on throughout the test, but won’t show directions until the independent part of the test.
The sound will be turned on for the independent part of the test unless you ask for it to be turned off
SatNavs do display speed and the speed limit for the road you will be on, however you should use the cars speedometer.
3: Reversing manoeuvres will be change
You will be asked to do 1 of the following
The ‘reverse around the corner’ and ‘3 point turn’ will no longer be tested, but still must be taught.
