This section will help you prepare for the big day and what instructions the Examiner will give you.
Pre-briefing at the start of the test
The Examiner will start the test by saying
“The test will last about 38 to 40 minutes and will include about 20 minutes of independent driving and various roads and traffic conditions. I will ask you to complete one manoeuvre and I may ask you to carry out the emergency stop. These are the sort of things that you have been practising with your driving instructor.”
The “tell me” safety question
This question will be asked at the test centre before you start driving. Here’s the explanation from the Examiner
“Now I’d like to ask you one safety question about your vehicle. The second question will be a “show me” question on the move.
You may be asked to open the bonnet for some of these questions.
A list of the “tell me” questions are below
The “show me” safety question
This question will be asked while you are driving. It will be asked at any time, including during the independent part.
The Examiner will ask the question in a location which gives you enough chance to demonstrate the safety check. Hers the instruction they will give
“When it’s safe, could you show me……”
If you aren’t sure how to do it, the Examiner will ask you to pull in when its safe and appropriate, and then repeat the question.
A list of “show me “ questions are below.
Independent driving
The Examiner will ask you to pull in when its safe and appropriate before starting the independent driving part of the test. At this point, the Examiner will select and start the route if using the SatNav.
Here’s the instruction you will be given
“Shortly, I’d like you to drive for some distance independently. I’d like you to follow a series of directions from the SatNav please. Continue to follow the SatNav until I tell you otherwise. Drive away when you are ready”.
Only one in 5 tests will be following traffic signs, and not directions from the SatNav.
Here’s the instruction you will be given
